Obese kids are getting a hard time from the press. Figures just released in the UK say that about a quarter of five year olds are fat. They say that in the long term, that is going to affect life expectancy. Others say that these figures are not really true and that death rates are not going to be affected in any significant way by obesity.
Whatever you believe about the above figures, as a parent you will be concerned about helping kids to discover fun facts about food and recipes. If they discover early on that healthy eating and a nutritional program is fun, then they will hooked for life.
The food industry shows kids about 20,000 ads a year ! The ads rarely show foods or snacks which could be called nutritional or healthy and the aim is to make more money. Most of these snacks are full of trans fats, sugar and salt and as kids will snack constantly, this is worrying. Research just published points the finger at food additives and colourings in these snacks as a possible cause of hyperactivity and ADHD.
The best way for kids to find out fun food facts is to let your them help around the kitchen. Kids like to cook and they like to eat what they cook. They are are much more adventurous when it comes to trying new foods than we think, and they will copy our attitudes so if we are boring in our choices of food, then they will copy us.
Kids are picky eaters because parents are too afraid to say this is what we eat. They are curious, so if you constantly say how amazing some food is, they might actually try it. They should be encouraged to try new foods but never forced. Eating together as a family cannot be overstressed. A study found that teenagers who ate more family meals were much more likely to eat more fruits vegetables and grains and drink less soda.
Kids want food from the kids menu because it just the same fare that they are getting at home -frozen fish fingers, chicken nuggets. Enthusiasm on the parents’ part usually works wonders. Another trick is to NOT let them choose from the kids’ menu but share a meal from the normal menu with you thereby involving them in the choice.
The University of Minnesota found that the situation as regards school lunches was not as hopeless as they feared. They found that there had been no drop off in sales when nutritional healthy dishes were served. This means more exepnse for the schools as they have to retrain cooking staff. Encouraged by these results, some of the schools in the State now serve a low-fat turkey hot dog instead of the traditional one.
Getting out your blender and using it for kids recipes is a great way of getting them into a healthy nutritional prrogram without them even knowing. As we all know, kids are not all that keen on fruit and vegetables but a lot of smoothie rcipes are really delicious and kids will go for them. These are way better than a bottle of soda.
